Updated: Oct 19, 2022

The USB Promoter group has announced a new USB4 version 2.0 which will allow the USB4 to transmit data with double data speed of 80 Gb/s.

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is one of the most widely use connection interface in the world. The USB Type A and Type C are the most famous USB interfaces all around the world. Recently, the latest USB4 version 2.0 has been announced and promises upto 2X speeds and few new features with standard same wires.

What is USB4 Version 2.0?

On September 1, 2022, the USB Promoter Group announced the USB4 Version 2.0. It was originally announced the speed of 40 Gb/s (Gigabits/ Second) of “data performance” over certified USB Type-C® cables and connectors. This newly launched is the second version of same and its promises to give 80 Gb/s (Gigabits/ Seconds) over certified USB Type-C® cables and connectors. The technical details are still not clear, but USB Promoter group says that Version 2.0 comes with a new physical layer architecture which will allow data transfer using active cables with upto 80 Gb/s. Basically, updating old and adding new. It is backwards compatible with older USB standards. It also supports the new DisplayPort2 and PCIe Gen 5. It will also update the specifications of USB PD (Power delivery) with this higher performance. However, it is currently only available for developers, and it will take ‘some’ time for the consumers to use USB 4 Version 2.

Specially people who uses higher performance displays may be like with 8K resolution display, Storages, USB Based hubs and docs.

It will be compatible with USB4 version 1.0, USB 3.2, USB 2.0 and Thunderbolt 3. Also, the new spec will allow USB 3.2 devices to exceed the speed upto 20 Gb/s.
